Affectionate, playful, and adaptable, the Havanese is a small companion breed known for its silky coat and charming personality. Adults typically weigh 7–13 pounds and stand 8.5–11.5 inches tall. Often described as “velcro dogs,” Havanese thrive on human companionship and are an excellent choice for families, singles, and seniors seeking a loving, loyal pet.
The Havanese originated in Cuba, where it was developed as a companion dog for Cuban aristocracy in the 18th century. Its ancestors, small bichon-type dogs from Europe, adapted to the island’s climate and lifestyle, eventually becoming the national dog of Cuba. Recognized by the American Kennel Club (AKC) in 1996, the Havanese has grown in popularity worldwide as a beloved family companion.
Bred primarily as a lap dog, the Havanese was developed to be adaptable, social, and resilient. Its silky, lightweight coat was suited to tropical climates, while its affectionate temperament made it a cherished household pet. Over time, breeders refined the breed for its intelligence and trainability, resulting in the lively, people-oriented Havanese we know today.
Havanese dogs are cheerful, affectionate, and eager to please. They bond closely with their families and are good with children and other pets when socialized early. Intelligent and curious, Havanese enjoy learning new tricks and participating in interactive games. They respond best to positive reinforcement training and require gentle handling due to their small size.
This breed adapts well to both apartment living and larger homes as long as it receives daily exercise and plenty of companionship. Short walks, play sessions, and puzzle toys help keep the Havanese mentally and physically stimulated. Their long, silky coat requires brushing several times a week to prevent tangles, and professional grooming every 6–8 weeks is recommended. Because they thrive on attention, Havanese dogs do not do well if left alone for long stretches.
No. Havanese have hair rather than fur, which means they shed very little. However, regular grooming is necessary to maintain their coat and prevent mats.
They can be, but like many small breeds, Havanese puppies require patience and consistency during house-training. Crate training and a regular schedule work best.
