Elegant, affectionate, and undeniably graceful, the Italian Greyhound is a small sighthound prized for its sleek build and gentle personality. Often referred to as the “IG” by enthusiasts, this breed blends athleticism with a loving, almost cat-like devotion to its people. Weighing between 7 to 14 pounds and standing 13 to 15 inches tall, the Italian Greyhound retains the speed and agility of its larger Greyhound cousin in a more delicate frame. Known for their sensitivity and charm, they are equally happy sprinting in bursts of play or curling up in a warm lap.
The Italian Greyhound’s origins trace back over 2,000 years, with evidence of similar small sighthounds found in ancient Mediterranean art and archaeology. Beloved by nobility in Greece, Rome, and later the Italian Renaissance courts, these dogs were prized for companionship, hunting small game, and their refined appearance. By the Middle Ages, they had become a fixture among the European aristocracy, particularly in Italy, hence their modern name. The breed was officially recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1886 and remains a symbol of elegance and loyalty.
While the Italian Greyhound has been admired for its beauty, it was also bred for function. Its slender frame, long legs, and aerodynamic body allowed it to chase small prey at remarkable speeds. Over time, selective breeding emphasized both its athletic ability and affectionate temperament, making it as suitable for the drawing room as the hunt field. Modern IGs retain strong chase instincts, but their primary role is that of a devoted companion. Advances in breeding have improved their genetic health while preserving their refined structure and spirited personality.
Italian Greyhounds are gentle, affectionate, and deeply attached to their families. They thrive on close human contact and are known for following their owners from room to room. Despite their delicate appearance, they have bursts of playful energy and a mischievous streak. Sensitive by nature, they respond best to gentle, positive reinforcement in training. They can be reserved around strangers but warm quickly with proper socialization. While generally good with children, they do best in homes where interactions are calm and respectful, due to their fine bone structure.
Italian Greyhounds adapt well to both apartment and house living, provided they receive daily exercise, typically short walks paired with opportunities to sprint safely in an enclosed area. They are sensitive to temperature extremes, especially cold, and often need sweaters or coats in cooler weather. Their short, fine coat requires minimal grooming but offers little protection, making them indoor-oriented dogs. They also have a delicate build, so play should be supervised to prevent injury. Mental engagement through gentle play and training helps keep them well-rounded and content.
Yes. Their small size and moderate exercise needs make them well-suited for apartment life, as long as they receive daily walks and safe playtime.
Absolutely. They are sighthounds with a strong chase instinct and love short bursts of high-speed play in secure areas, but they are not endurance runners.
While they are athletic and agile, their fine bone structure means they are more prone to leg injuries than sturdier breeds. Care should be taken to prevent rough play or high-impact jumps.
